Cloud browser selection guide

Browserbase alternatives for AI agents

Compare four options for cloud browser APIs, saved browser state and web content. Start with the part of your Browserbase workflow you need to replace, then test that workload end to end.

02 / The alternatives

Where each alternative fits

01

AdsCrawl

Reusable profiles and browser tools for your agent

Consider it when

Consider AdsCrawl when your application needs browser execution alongside HTML, Markdown, structured fields or screenshots. Cloud Browser runs full AdsPower fingerprint browsers with isolated profiles and saved cookies. Remote CDP supplies temporary sessions for Playwright or Puppeteer; your application controls the agent loop.

Check before switching

The two browser lifecycles are separate. Cloud Browser runtime requires a paid plan and a valid proxy on each API-key start; its viewer requires a login session. Stop that runtime explicitly. Delete temporary CDP sessions after use. Neither flow supplies a hosted model or agent planner.

02

Browserless

Moving existing browser scripts to hosted infrastructure

Consider it when

Consider Browserless when you already control the workflow in Playwright or Puppeteer. Its documented Playwright setup connects to hosted browsers over CDP, with a separate native Playwright protocol path. BrowserQL also documents reconnecting a browser to these clients.

Check before switching

Choose the connection path your client expects. Move local launch options into the supported remote configuration, and validate reconnect and close behavior. Reconnecting a running browser is a different requirement from restoring saved state in a new session.

03

Steel

Agent-controlled sessions with configurable state and viewing

Consider it when

Consider Steel when your agent needs managed browser sessions that your code controls over CDP. Its configuration documents saved profiles, imported cookies and web storage, proxy settings and an interactive viewer. The Playwright integration reuses the context and page returned by the session.

Check before switching

Select the state mechanism for the task: profileId loads a saved profile, persistProfile saves changes after release, and sessionContext supplies selected state. Check those transitions with a test account. Release each session when finished rather than relying on its timeout.

04

Firecrawl

Content extraction and crawling with browser interaction

Consider it when

Consider Firecrawl when the main output is Markdown or structured web content, including workflows across multiple pages. It also offers browser interaction: Browser Sandbox documents standalone sessions with CDP, live view and persistent session options, while Interact covers agent interaction workflows.

Check before switching

Evaluate the exact API you will use. A content extraction request, a crawl job and an interactive browser session have different outputs and lifecycles. Check supported state, session limits and usage for that interface before replacing a Browserbase workflow.

When staying with Browserbase makes sense

Browserbase already offers Playwright connections, Contexts for saved browser data and embeddable Live View. If those features fit your application and its operational requirements, compare the migration effort with the specific improvement you need. Stagehand adds AI actions and extraction as a separate automation layer; a browser provider change must account for that dependency.

03 / Migration

Validate a complete task before migrating

  1. Separate browser hosting from agent logic

List your Browserbase session, Context, Live View and Stagehand dependencies. Test framework and version compatibility separately from CDP connectivity; a new connection URL alone does not replace those integrations.

  2. Restart with the state and proxy you need

Use a test account to log in, end the runtime and start again. Verify the cookies and storage your application uses. Check proxy region, supplied credentials and behavior when the proxy fails.

  3. Measure completed work and cleanup

Run the same pages, output requirements and concurrency. Record successful tasks, retries, browser time, idle time, proxy traffic and model usage. Confirm shutdown after both success and failure, then compare costs using current plan terms.

Browserbase alternative questions

Which Browserbase alternative is best for AI agents?

Start with the agent's tools. AdsCrawl provides temporary CDP sessions and content endpoints, with saved Cloud Browser profiles as a separate workflow. Browserless suits existing browser scripts; Steel offers configurable agent sessions; Firecrawl combines content workflows with browser interaction. These are selection suggestions based on the documented capabilities above, not measured task-success rankings.

Is an alternative automatically compatible with Stagehand?

No. Stagehand is an automation SDK with its own runtime and version requirements. Verify its documented browser configuration for your chosen version and provider. Supporting CDP does not by itself establish compatibility with every Stagehand feature.

Which option is cheaper than Browserbase?

This guide does not establish a cost winner. Compare the same completed task, including browser runtime, proxy traffic, retries and model usage. For AdsCrawl saved Cloud Browser profiles, include the paid plan and your own proxy cost. Check the current plans before committing.
